Re: newbie on the stve top
Mon, December 6, 2004 - 7:32 PMObligatory mention of Distilation being Illegal in the US w/o a permit. See the applicable laws for your country at: www.homedistiller.org/legal.htm
The best overallsource for info on which still type is best for what kind of alcohol - goto www.homedistiller.org
The design you mention can be found here > www.homedistiller.org/graphic...till.gif
Just note that if opened, or if a leak occurs, the overflow will contain alcohol, and a flareup could blow the still. Open flames are DANGEROUS and unnessesary. Save that kind of stuff for outside where there is more room to be safe and larger safer devices can be used. -

Wed, December 8, 2004 - 12:47 PMGood to hear it...
there are more diagrams on the web, specifically of the type of unit you mentioned. However, you should consider a double boiler setup.... much safer.
It all depends anyway on the intended type of end spirits... -

Re: newbie on the stve top
Mon, January 10, 2005 - 2:32 PMHomedistiller.org has actual info on distilling items such as whiskey... the main portion of this process is in fermenting the mash. Truthfully this is a big question... check the site for more info...
Copper -vs stainless - Stainless is easier to clean and sterilize, copper has an unknown quality for pulling out the impurities in the distillate. I know alot of old style whiskey stills used copper, and it wasnt just because of how easier it is to work with.

Re: newbie on the stve top
Thu, January 13, 2005 - 7:59 PMI have a "friend" who bought a still exactly like this one on ebay...
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll
"He" likes it and has gotten good results with it. Go to your local homebrew shop and see what they have there. They can probably hook you up with some fermentation buckets and some turbo yeast.
My friend suggest you go for it, revenuers be damned.
