Hello everyone, I'm looking forward to participating in this tribe!
I'm interesting in home distillation (not that i do it...it is illegal). I've made a few passable brews of cordials, absinthe and cider. I'm always in interested in hearing other people's experiences with simple stills. I didn't have the money or mechanical inclination for a reflux still, so if i had one, it would be a stovetop and bucket still.
Looking forward to meeting people!

Sat, August 20, 2005 - 4:09 PMThe beans are all over the floor. Hi! Let us communicate and shuffel ideas.
What I understand - DON'T use Aluminum anywhere in the still. Copper or stainless steel. From what I gathered from the net and my local library, copper is the best bet; at least somewhere. ie, condenser. -

Thu, August 25, 2005 - 11:57 AMI use an aluminum pot and lid for my still and don't have any problems.
I got a good deal on a discontinued turkey frier...
I do have a copper column and coil though. The copper reacts to pull out sulfides. The only problem with aluminum is the durability. It gets pitted and corroded easily, which will lead to having to replace it sooner than if you spend the money for stainless steel.

Re: Brand new...
Sat, August 20, 2005 - 4:03 PMHello, I'm new here myself. If you're machanically disinclined check out www.the amazing plastic still.com.(?) I'm in the process of getting all the stuff together. If it works - hoo-ray and hello. Being a wage-slave with aged parents (someone loves those old folks) I get tight with my hard earned, you know? But is far as I've been able to find out, the whole Easter egg is just around $100, not counting the mash. Of course, I won't make any, but I love knowledge. Bests!
